Chemistry is the study of matter, its composition, properties and reactions. This department at Olivet seeks to give students a general knowledge of chemistry while preparing them for specific careers or graduate studies.

The demand for chemists continues to be very strong. Our graduates have been very successful in getting jobs and gaining admission to graduate schools. Career fields include clinical, industrial, and research laboratory work, teaching in secondary schools and work in scientific or technological areas of company administration.
A college degree with a a chemistry major opens the door to graduate study for careers in chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, and medicine. According to a recent survey, ONU chemistry majors taking the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) have received good scores in proportion to their grade point averages at Olivet.
INTERESTS AND PREPARATION...
Students preparing to major in chemistry should take a college preparatory course, including courses in science and mathematics.
Students considering a chemistry major should have a strong aptitude and interest in natural sciences and mathematics. They should have strong written and verbal communication skills. Careers in chemistry often call for individual work or joint efforts with small groups, so those going into the field should be comfortable working in these settings.
